Caroline Wozniacki has been one of the big stories from the opening week of the US Open and she has been given glowing praise from former British No 1’s Johanna Konta and Laura Robson.

Mum-of-two Wozniacki secured the biggest win of her comeback by beating 11th seed Petra Kvitova to reach the third round, with her 7-5 7-6 (7-5) in Wednesday’s night session in New York a remarkable moment for a player who has been away from tennis for the last three years.

Wozniacki was in tears after she beat the former two-time Wimbledon champion just a few weeks into her comeback, with Konta suggesting Wozniacki’s incredible physique is driving her success.

“She has always looked great,” said a smiling Konta, who is working for Sky Sports at the US Open. “You should have seen her two weeks after she gave birth… oh my god it was just ridiculous!

“Physically, that has always been her superpower. That has always been her engine as a player.

“If she was going to come back, that was always going to be what drove her on and she just looks physically amazing. She is moving so well and that is where she builds her consistency from.

“I was in the invitational event at Wimbledon a few weeks ago and Caroline played in that. The standard of that competition was just insane and my body didn’t thank me for playing in that event afterwards.

“Now I see Caroline out here at the US Open winning matches and she looks like she has never been away. It’s just amazing.”

Former British No 1 Laura Robson has joined Konta in offering praise to Wozniacki on her stunning comeback in New York, after admitting she was blown away by her physcial conditioning when she joined Konta by lining up alongside the Dane in the Wimbledon invitational event last month.

“I didn’t feel like I was match ready to play in that event when I saw the shape the other girls were in, especially Caroline,” Robson told Tennis365 at a Play Your Way To Wimbledon event.

“I was out there on Court No.1 and that is not what I was expecting! The level was so good this year and Wozniacki looked in amazing shape.

“Caroline didn’t even win that event at Wimbledon as she lost to (Kim) Clijsters and (Justine) Henin in the final, so a lot of these doubles teams could still be entered in the draw for big events now.

“It’s amazing to see Caroline coming back and playing so well and it’s great for tennis.”

Robson is working for Sky Sports in New York and she interviewed Wozniacki ahead of the tournament, with the 33-year-old clearly relishing her return to the court.

“I’m just proud that we are quite a few mum’s on tour that have paved the way for the future generation that it’s possible to take a break, have a family, then come back,” said Wozniacki.

“I love playing tennis, I love to play the game, I’m very passionate about it, and I want to be the best I possibly can be.

“But I also feel like there’s some sort of a calmness that comes with the perspective of being a mum, having been away from the game for a while.”
