Novak Djokovic already being backed to win ‘three or four Grand Slams’ in 2024

Novak Djokovic lifted his third Grand Slam title of the 2023 campaign on Sunday when he brushed aside Daniil Medvedev in the US Open final and “there is no reason” why he can’t equal or better that tally next year.

That is the verdict from two-time French Open runner-up Alex Corretja.

Djokovic has now won three majors in a single season time for the fourth time in his career as his latest three-peat follows similar achievements in 2011, 2015 and 2021. Rising star Carlos Alcaraz was the man to deny him the Calendar Grand Slam as the Spaniard beat him in the Wimbledon final back in July.

The 36-year-old’s victory over Medvedev in New York helped him to extend his Grand Slam record as he is now on 24 majors with Rafael Nadal on 22 and the retired Roger Federer on 20.

And it is not just in the Slams where he is excelling at this late stage of his career as he is also still a master when it comes to ATP 1,000 events as he defeated Alcaraz in the Cincinnati Open final in August.

Djokovic also returned to the top of the ATP Rankings on Monday, taking over from Alcaraz for his 10th stint as the world No 1.

Speaking on Eurosport, tennis commentator and former world No 2 Corretja feels when it comes to majors, the world remains Djokovic’s oyster.

“This is so special. It is amazing to see him win another Grand Slam after what was an amazing match. The atmosphere and the love he is getting from New York, we have to say that Novak deserves all of these things,” he said.

“Winning Grand Slams is one thing, but to be world No 1 again amongst a group of youngsters, guys like Daniil Medvedev, that is amazing. That means that you consistently win on all the different surfaces and against different opponents.

“I think what stands out for me is that his weaknesses early on – his mindset, his body language, he used to get tired and have to retire – just look at him now, they are his strengths.

“That is what we appreciate so much, when you turn a weakness into a strength and that is perhaps his greatest achievement.

“There is no reason that I can see why he cannot be a Grand Slam winner again three or four times next year because his mind is so strong and he can do everything.”
