US Open draw: Simona Halep, Garbine Muguruza, Serena Williams in same quarter
World No 1 Simona Halep has been given a brutal US Open draw as she is in the same quarter as four former world number ones.
The French Open champion has Garbine Muguruza, Serena Williams, Venus Williams and Karolina Pliskova in her quarter of the draw.
Halep will face Kaia Kanepi in the first round, Muguruza takes on Australian Ashleigh Barty and 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena will be up against Magda Linette.
If all goes according to plan, then there could be an all-Williams clash in the third round with the winner possibly facing Halep.
Meanwhile, Australian Open champion Caroline Wozniacki faces former US Open winner Sam Stosur in the first round while Petra Kvitova is also in her quarter of the draw.
Defending US Open champion Sloane Stephens takes on Evgeniya Rodina in the first round with two-time Grand Slam winner Victoria Azarenka the main threat in her quarter.
Wimbledon champion and fourth seed Angelique Kerber is in the bottom half of the draw along Wozniacki and her quarter contains Maria Sharapova, Jelena Ostapenko and Madison Keys.
Kerber will face Margarita Gasparyan in her opener while Sharapova takes on a qualifier.
