US Open fashion hits and misses: Naomi Osaka, Coco Gauff star – but Jannik Sinner falls flat

The US Open has played host to some memorable looks over the years – and a few kits have caught the eye in 2024.

We look at some of the best, and some of the worst, outfits on display in New York.

Naomi Osaka – Hit

No one’s outfit has attracted more attention than Osaka, the two-time US Open champion who is back at the tournament for the first time since becoming a mother.

The former world No 1 walked onto court for her opening match against Jelena Ostapenko wearing a white Nike jacket with an oversized lime green bow on the back, accompanied by a white tutu.

Osaka’s match outfit was also lime green and featured four tiers of ruffles, with mini green bows attached to both her shoes.

The Yoon Ahn-designed outfit is bold – but has certainly proven to be a hit.

Jannik Sinner – Miss

Entering the tournament as the world No 1 and one of the favourites for the title, you would have thought that Nike would have given Sinner a kit worthy of his status in the game.

However, the general reception to the Italian’s outfit has been a little underwhelming – and it is not hard to see why.

His kit seems to be a combination of various shades of green, greys, and blacks – not exactly a memorable combination.

Let’s hope that the Australian Open champion is given more striking kits in the future.

Coco Gauff – Hit

Gauff’s partnership with New Balance has seen the reigning US Open champion wear a range of impressive kits in recent months.

And it is no exception at Flushing Meadows this year, with the world No 3 impressing with her custom day and night outfits.

Her navy blue night session kit was on full display in her round two win over Tatjana Maria, a kit not dissimilar from her impressive Australian Open outfit.

But the real winner is arguably her light blue day session kit, which she wore for her opening match against Varvara Gracheva on Monday.

Aryna Sabalenka – Miss

Two-time Slam winner and former US Open runner-up Sabalenka is one of the biggest personalities on the WTA – it feels a shame that her New York kit is not representing that.

The world No 2 is another with custom day-night outfits, wearing an all-black kit for her night session match in round one, and dark pink for her day session match against Lucia Bronzetti on Wednesday.

The outfits are not particularly bad, but it feels that someone of her standing in the game should have bigger and bolder kits offered to her by Nike.

Jessica Pegula – Hit

Perhaps the best kit of all this year, particularly on the women’s side, is the Adidas outfit – which comes with both a sleeveless and sleeved look.

World No 6 and home favourite Jessica Pegula is probably the highest-profile player in the draw wearing it, though Elina Svitolina and Caroline Wozniacki are also wearing a similar design.

The outfit is sleek, eye-catching, and perfect for day or night play in New York.

Ben Shelton – Hit and Miss

While Iga Swiatek leads On’s status in the game, Shelton is perhaps the highest-profile male player to wear their outfits on the court.

The US star has a big and bold style of tennis and his On kits are perfect to represent that, with the outfits bright and bold – even if they aren’t everybody’s cup of tea.

The issue Shelton and other On athletes seem to be facing is that while the outfits are bold and sleek, there hasn’t seemed to be much variety so far.

On kits have been very similar at recent Grand Slams, and it feels like there should be a bit of a shakeup ahead of the Australian Open next year.
