Daniil Medvedev burned the midnight oil at the US Open with his third-round clash against Sebastian Baez finishing in the early hours of Sunday morning and one fan did get a little too pumped up for the world No 3’s liking.

2021 US Open champion Medvedev’s match against the Argentine got off to a late start, but the third seed produced a commanding display to record a 6-2, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6) victory at 1:30am New York time and it was a relatively “early” finish compared to some other matches.

Known for his humourous post-match interviews, the former world No 1 thanked the crowd for staying up late and keeping things civil, but of course there is always “that one guy”.

“Thanks to all the guys who don’t shout between first and second serve, you guys are great,” he joked.

“But I think there is one guy – I don’t know if he has a girlfriend or wife – but I don’t know how his girlfriend or wife is going to sleep because I think he is so pumped up that he’s gonna say tonight ‘vamos, vamos, vamos, vamos’ just none stop. Yeah, I feel sorry for him.”

Medvedev will face 13th seed Alex de Minaur in the fourth round after the Australian defeated Nicolas Jarry 6-1, 6-3, 6-2.

Asked what it’s like to finish a match so late, he replied: “Tough, I just want to go to sleep. That’s it, nothing more.

“I felt like we were both playing well, even in the first two sets. I was just a little better on important points, everything was going my way.

“In the third set he raised his level just a little bit to make the match even tougher. A bit of luck and some good play from me kept me in the set and it’s good to not finish at 4 (am).”

The third seed added: “It was just a tough match. When you start playing at 11pm, it feels tough. Sometimes you feel fine, but it also depends sometimes I sleep before matches, sometimes I don’t and this time I decided not to sleep because you never know when the women are going to finish, if they are going to finish at 8 or, as it was, like 10:30. I was feeling pretty bad on the court so that’s why I was nervous.”
