Aryna Sabalenka, Mirra Andreeva or Iga Swiatek: Biggest winner after Coco Gauff and Jessica Pegula exits?
Four of the top-10 women’s seeds lost in the first round at Wimbledon 2025 while another six seeded players also failed to make it into the second round.
So, who were the big winners in terms of the other top seeds remaining in the women’s singles main draw?
Second seed Coco Gauff is the highest seed to fall at the first hurdle so far at the grass-court Grand Slam as the French Open champion was upset by Dayana Yastremska in straight sets. Her defeat came not long after fellow American and third seed Jessica Pegula was beaten by Elisabetta Cocciaretto.
Fifth seed Zheng Qinwen and ninth seed Paula Badosa were the other top-10 players to lose, which means the Wimbledon paths of certain players have been made a little easier on paper.
Aryna Sabalenka’s Path
The world No 1 started her campaign with a solid two-set win over qualifier Carson Branstine and her bracket has not really opened up as 32nd seed McCartney Kessler was the highest-seed to fall.
Sabalenka is still projected to face 14th seed Elina Svitolina in the fourth round, but even before that she has a possible banana skin third-round clash against either Emma Raducanu or former Wimbledon winner Marketa Vondrousova.
Badosa’s exit is also not too much of a boost as sixth seed Madison Keys is the highest seed in the second bracket, so the two are still set for an Australian Open final rematch in the quarter-final.

Ditto for the semi-final as Zheng’s defeat to Katerina Siniakova doesn’t have an impact on the projected semi-final line-up for the top half as Sabalenka was always due to meet fourth seed Jasmine Paolini.
But Zheng’s loss is good news for Paolini as she is now expected to face 13th seed Amanda Anisimova.
Three of the five highest seeds left in the draw are in the top half.
Mirra Andreeva/Iga Swiatek’s Path
Gauff and Pegula’s defeats mean seventh seed Andreeva is the highest-ranked player in the bottom half of the draw followed by eighth seed Iga Swiatek.
Andreeva is still projected to take on 10th seed Emma Navarro in the fourth round, but she was set to face third seed Pegula in the quarter-final and, with 15th seed Karolina Muchova also losing, 18th seed Ekaterina Alexandrova is next in line.
There were no big upsets in Swiatek’s bracket as she is still in line to face 2022 Wimbledon winner Elena Rybakina (seeded 11th), but the road gets easier if she passes that test.
Gauff’s demise means 16th seed Daria Kasatkina is now projected to face Swiatek in the quarter-final.
The Andreeva-Swiatek semi-final is still on with the winner expected to face Sabalenka in the final.
