‘I’m getting old for a tennis player,’ says Andy Murray as he laments Wimbledon cancellation

Two-time champion Andy Murray has bemoaned the fact that there was no Wimbledon this year, saying “you never know how many opportunities you’re going to have left to play” at big events.

Wimbledon 2020 was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic, making it the first time since World War II that the grass-court Grand Slam did not take place.

Murray, who won the tournament in 2013 and 2016, was hoping to make his singles return at SW19 this year having missed the previous two editions due to injury.

However, tennis was forced to go on a hiatus at the beginning of March due to Covid-19 and will only restart in August.

“Missing the big competitions because I’m getting old for a tennis player, you never know how many opportunities you’re going to have left to play the biggest competitions,” the former world No 1 said during a video call hosted by the Duchess of Cambridge, Kate Middleton, with pupils from Bond Primary School in south London also listening in.

“So missing Wimbledon this week is obviously a shame. I miss the travelling. That’s one of the things that I really enjoyed doing over my career is seeing different parts of the world.”
