Injured Kyle Edmund suffers Wimbledon heartbreak against Fernando Verdasco

Kyle Edmund is out of Wimbledon after injury cost him a two-set lead against Fernando Verdasco in the second round.

The British number one was cruising and looking strong as he established a commanding lead, but he jarred his left knee as he slid to reach a ball in the third set, which he was winning 3-0 at one point, and was unable to recover.

Edmund did battle on and complete the match, but all he had to show for his efforts after nearly four hours was a devastating 6-4, 6-6, 6-7 (3-7), 3-6, 4-6 defeat.

Feliciano Lopez, who partnered Andy Murray to the Queen’s doubles title last month, is also out after losing to Russian tenth seed Karen Khachanov 4-6, 6-4, 7-5, 6-4.

“I just tried to stay there, I didn’t start too well but Felli is always difficult on grass,” Khachanov said after the match.

“I couldn’t find a rhythm then when I found some that turned the situation around.

“I think I played well in the last couple of years and have had some good results.

“I’m feeling pretty comfortable, nothing to complain about and I’m in the third round and feeling pretty good. I adapt to my next rival and try to get ready for it.”

Khachanov will face Roberto Bautista Agut in the third round, with Verdasco set to meet Thomas Fabbiano.
