Jannik Sinner snaps back at reporter after question on the impact of Carlos Alcaraz defeat
Jannik Sinner has insisted he is not nursing the wounds of his French Open defeat against Carlos Alcaraz in Paris earlier this month.
Sinner had three match points in his epic contest against Alcaraz at Roland Garros, but ended up losing out to the Spaniard in a five-set thriller that was instantly hailed as one of the best tennis matches of all-time.
Some players suffer a hangover after a defeat of that magnitude, but Sinner rejected the suggestion that he was still reeling after his loss against his great rival.
Sinner continued to make serene progress at Wimbledon with a 6-1, 6-3, 6-1 win against Pedro Martinez on Centre Court and when he was asked if he was still thinking about the Paris defeat against Alcaraz, he was quick to snap back at the reporter.
“Look, it’s a new tournament. New Grand Slam. New surface,” said Sinner, when he was asked whether he was still bruised by his Paris beating at the hands of Alcaraz.

“I’m not concerned about my level I can play at times. I’m not concerned that one loss can influence you for so long time.
“I believe that here is a new chance that I can do something good for my side. If I play some good tennis, I know that I can go far, potentially. Maybe I will lose the next round. I don’t know. But I’m not concerned. Honestly, I’m very, very happy to be here.
“I’m happy that I have the chance to play on such special courts here in Wimbledon. There is no better place to play tennis at this moment. Everything is going well. I had a good preparation to prepare this tournament. Now let’s see how I do here and how far I can go.”
Sinner could be in line to face a semi-final showdown against Novak Djokovic before a potential re-match against Alcaraz in what would be his first Wimbledon final and he admits he is keeping an eye on other sections of the draw as he plots his own route through Wimbledon.
“I know everything what’s happening,” he added. “I know how players play. This is also part of my job because I also have to check these kind of things.
“I know mostly I look on my side, what I have to do. At the end of the day tennis, you have one opponent at a time. You cannot prepare tactically something for the next potential opponent because if you lose against this guy, you’re out of the tournament.
“We take step by step, day by day. Tomorrow is a practice day to prepare the next match. Hopefully prepare it in a good way.
“Every player makes some problems onto court. You have to try to solve them with every day is different tactic. This is how we approach every match.”
Sinner will take on Grigor Dimitrov in the fourth round, with a potential meeting with Djokovic and then Alcaraz looming large on his horizon.
