Jessica Pegula dunks on paywalled potshots in fabulous Twitter volley
Jessica Pegula won’t be subscribing to the publication taking potshots at her from behind a paywall.
Pegula lost her sixth Grand Slam quarterfinal to the charging Marketa Vondrousova who has since gone on to reach the championship match at Wimbledon.
Pegula responded to a fan who shared a screenshot of a headline that read ‘Six quarter-finals, six defeats: Jessica Pegula needs dynamic that family billions can’t buy’.
The world No 4 would tweet in response: I’ll tell you what I won’t buy is this [garbage can emoji] article.
Pegula didn’t have too many answers for the gathered press following her defeat to the streaking Czech star but considering the nature of her defeat the attendance of a media briefing seems a bit cruel.
When she was pressed on whether there was some missing piece to her Grand Slam quarter-final puzzle, Pegula said that she felt she was getting closer to getting beyond the last eight having been within a game or two of defeating Vondrousova.
“I have no idea. I don’t know. I was one game away today almost. I don’t really know what the answer is,” Pegula said.
“I keep putting myself in good positions, but I guess it’s not enough. I mean, I guess I was closer today.
“I really don’t know.”

Pegula was able to reflect on a year of progress in her game on grass, and also in the health of her mother who was unwell when the American No 1 competed at the All England Club last season.
“A year ago when I came here, I didn’t have any warm-up. My mom basically almost died.
“I think a year coming around to make quarters, to see that she’s able to watch my match was a huge success for myself and for my family.
“Looking at the positives, it feels like way longer than a year, but it’s only been a year. To look at the positive side, yes, that’s something I’m very proud of, was able to build on momentum.
“Hopefully my grass court prowess will be better next year,” Pegula said with a smile.
“I definitely feel much more comfortable on it.
“I feel like I’ve gotten through a lot of hurdles on this surface.”
As for the way forward, Pegula hopes that her hard work will pay off.
“There’s not like a clear answer for everything, right, to prove that’s going to make me say, Yes, for sure if I do this, I’m going to win a Grand Slam, make semis, make finals, whatever it is. There’s nothing like that,” Pegula added.
“I just have to keep telling myself to put myself in good positions, keep getting better and working on things.”
