Juan Martin Del Potro with some heartfelt words for Andy Murray

Juan Martin Del Potro has backed Andy Murray to get back to his very best as he returns from injury, but he has suggested the two-time Wimbledon champion needs to be cautious as he plots the next step of his comeback.

Murray is weighing up the prospect of playing at Wimbledon after he made an encouraging comeback in defeat against Nick Kyrgios at Queen’s Club last week, before backing that up with a win against Stan Wawrinka at the ATP event in Eastbourne.

Del Potro has overcome career-threatening injuries to work his way back into the top four of the tennis rankings and a smile broke out on his face as he spoke to Tennis365 about Murray’s return at The Boodles exhibition event at Stoke Park.

“I am so happy for Andy,” began Del Potro, who has shared the court with Murray for some epic matches that included their 2016 Olympic gold medal match in Rio.

“To see a guy like him coming back and trying to play tennis again after all his problems is amazing for the tennis world and the history of our sport.

“He now has time to feel ready, to get confident with his body because the tennis game is very tough, but I have no doubt that when he is fully fit and confident in himself that we will see the real Andy Murray once again.

“He will know when the right time to play again. Wrist injuries like I had, shoulder problems or hip injuries like Andy has come through are some of the worst you can have in our sport, so we are just all so happy to see him back on the court.”

Del Potro also reflected on his own injury comebacks, as he admitted he lived through moments when he felt he would never return to the top.

“I had moments when I thought I would never play again at this level, but now I am enjoying my tennis again,” added the world No 4. “I keep surprising myself with what I am achieving and every tournament I go into now is not about rankings or worrying about what might happen. I just enjoy the moment and see where it takes me.”

Del Potro – who reached the semi-finals of last month’s French Open – won his first match of the grass court season at The Boodles event as he beat American Taylor Fritz in an entertaining match decided by a champions tie-break.
