Liam Broady upset world No 4 Casper Ruud in five sets in the second round of the 2023 Wimbledon Championships to earn the biggest win of his career. 

The Brit prevailed 6-4, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0 over the three-time Grand Slam runner-up to delight the Centre Court crowd on Thursday.

The world No 142 fell 1-3 behind in the opening set, but broke back for 2-3 and again to go up 4-3 to turn the set around.

Ruud responded by breaking serve to lead 3-1 again in the second set and held on this time after converting a sixth set point – leveling the match at one set apiece.

In the third set, the 24-year-old Norwegian struck to earn the only break of the set at 5-4, before saving two break points in serving it out to take the lead.

Broady reacted superbly by breaking Ruud to take a 2-0 lead in the fourth set and comfortably held serve four more times to take the contest into a deciding fifth set.

The 29-year-old then produced a remarkable display to win the final set without dropping a game. He broke Ruud to love in the opening game, before saving a break point to take a 2-0 lead.

The home favourite converted a third break point in a lengthy third game to earn a crucial double break advantage. The left-hander then stormed through the next two games without losing a point, before closing out a remarkable victory on his serve.

Following his triumph, the Brit reflected on fulfilling his dream of playing on Centre Court at the All England Club.

“It’s a terrifying, exhilarating experience coming out onto Centre Court at Wimbledon. It’s been my dream since I was five years old,” said the 29-year-old in his on-court interview.

“I said to my mum this morning – she doesn’t really like watching – that I’ve already won £80,000 this week, so you can chill out a bit!”

Broady will face world No 29 Denis Shapovalov – a Wimbledon semi-finalist in 2021 – in the third round. He discussed the prospect of facing the 24-year-old Canadian.

“Denis is a mercurial talent, he’s one of the best players in the world, as Casper is. He’s won junior Wimbledon here, I think he’s made the quarter-finals, he’s an amazing player. But with a crowd like this, why not have a go again?,” he added.

Broady’s win was his first ever against an opponent ranked in the top 10.
