Britain’s Liam Broady is making waves at Wimbledon for a second successive year, after his stunning win against No 4 seed Caper Ruud on Centre Court on Thursday.

Broady’s thrilling five-set victory against the French Open finalist from last month was the best moment of his career, as he booked his place in the third round a Wimbledon once again.

Manchester City fan Broady outlasted world number four Ruud to win 6-4 3-6 4-6 6-3 6-0 in an enthralling contest that lasted three hours and 27 minutes.

Victory over Ruud, who had made the finals of Roland Garros and the US Open during the past 12 months, was even sweeter for the Stockport left-hander given it took place in front of a buoyant Centre Court crowd.

“It was a pretty terrifying, exhilarating experience coming out at Centre Court on Wimbledon, but it’s been my dream since I was five-years-old,” Broady reflected, having lost his only other match on the iconic court against Andy Murray in in 2016.

“I played on Court One in the finals of the juniors (in 2011). I was a set and a breakup. I completely choked it, completely guffed it. That has kind of haunted me my entire career, to be honest.

“It always bothered me coming back, playing on the bigger courts and never really feeling like I was comfortable and had performed. Losing to Andy on Centre, losing to (Milos) Raonic on One, then (Alex) De Minaur on One and never winning so much as a set.

“That’s why it felt good. I feel like it’s taken a monumental effort for me personally to be able to win a match on Centre Court at Wimbledon. I mean, Novak (Djokovic) hasn’t lost a match on Centre in 10 years, which is a testament to how good of a player he is, as well, but that was a big one for me.

“This is why I play tennis. I’m 29, going into this tournament I’m 150 in the world, I only have so many Wimbledons left in my career. This has to be seen as a reward. You have to take the bull by the horns with these opportunities.

“I have played on Centre Court now twice in my entire career. The opportunity might not come by again for one reason or another, so I felt more excited than anything going out there.

“Because as hard as it is, you still have to kind of relish the opportunity. It is the pinnacle of the sport, the pinnacle of almost any sport, Centre Court of Wimbledon. Obviously to have got the result as well is the icing on the cake.”

Broady was cheered on by his stunning girlfriend Eden Silva, who is also a professional tennis player.

The pair have been dating since early 2022 and have posted several images of their love story on their Instagram posts.

British star Silva, who has a career-high ranking of No 300, has played doubles twice in the main draw at Wimbledon, but she failed to make it through to compete at The Championships this year.

Meanwhile, Broady’s activity on social media will also come under the spotlight after his success at Wimbledon, with his feisty comments on Twitter often creating a stir.

Broady realises the chance to wind up fans of Manchester City’s rivals, while also offering his views on a wide range of political and social issues.

The British star has also explained his passion for Manchester City in an interview with the club’s website, as he admitted many in his family have different allegiances.

Broady explained his passion for Manchester City in an interview with the club’s website, as he admitted many in his family have different allegiances.

“It’s amazing. I think we’re going through a bit of a golden generation here as City fans,” he said.

“Obviously, growing up, having seen City previously, it’s just incomparable. We’re one of the best, if not the best, football teams in the world.

“Hopefully this goes on for another 100 or 200 years but I’m just grateful as long as Pep Guardiola is here.

“Even after a tough loss, we still see good football and see some of the best players in the world playing at the Etihad Stadium.

“It’s tough with the tennis to get to games, but I’ve tried to make an effort for the last six to nine months to come more, I absolutely love it,” he added.

“My family are historically Manchester United fans.

“My dad’s never been that into football and being from Stockport there’s a large City following there, so at school there were a lot of Blues.

“My eldest sisters were both City fans and when I was six years old, my sister Naomi made me sign a contract saying I’d always be a City fan lifelong, so it’s quite a legally binding one to be honest! Ever since then I’ve been a big City fan.”
