Wimbledon 2023: Women’s seeds for singles draw as doubts swirl about Elena Rybakina

Elena Rybakina Wimbledon champion

The Wimbledon women’s singles draw is set to feature most, if not all, of the big players on the WTA Tour.

A major doubt is defending champion Elena Rybakina who has seen her grass swing severely curtailed by illness.

However, as things stand, the defending champion has indicated that she will be turning out in the third Grand Slam of the year.

Rybakina will take the third seeding should she feel that she can compete at the 2023 edition of the Championships Wimbledon.

Ahead of her in the seeding stakes are world No 1 Iga Swiatek and the women chasing her top spot, No 2 Aryna Sabalenka.

Neither Swiatek nor Sabalenka have lit the world on fire in terms of their grass court form, which means that several players will be eyeing out a potential Grand Slam.

The next five seeds are all chasing a maiden Grand Slam title, with Jessica Pegula seeded fourth, Caroline Garcia fifth, Ons Jabeur sixth, Coco Gauff seventh and Maria Sakkari eighth.

However, not a few pundits have tipped world No 9 and ninth seed Petra Kvitova for a third Wimbledon title after she won the German Open on the grass of Berlin.

Kvitova pulled out of Eastbourne this week after her exertions in Berlin in order to be in the best shape for a bid at a third Grand Slam title and 32nd WTA Tour crown overall.
