‘Wimbledon axing would leave question marks for Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Andy Murray’

Tennis pundit Annabel Croft admits cancelling Wimbledon will be a “nightmare” for players like Roger Federer, Serena Williams and Andy Murray.
Wimbledon looks set to be cancelled with the All England Club expected to make the announcement later on Wednesday. If that is the case, then it will be the first time since World War II (1940-1945) that the grass-court major won’t take place.
Naturally it will have a big impact on all players and the likes of Federer and Williams are in the twilight of their careers and both will be 39 by the time Wimbledon takes place next year.
Federer sits on 20 Grand Slams, one more than Rafael Nadal, while Williams is still looking for a record-equalling 24th major.
Meanwhile, Murray was expected to make his comeback at the Miami Open with high hopes of competing at Wimbledon, but it now appears he won’t play at SW19 for a third year in a row.
“How many more times can Roger Federer realistically try to win Wimbledon?” former British No 1 Croft is quoted as saying by Mirror.co.uk.
“And if the French Open does take place later in the year, that benefits Nadal more than anybody potentially. And then you look at Serena and her best chance to win another Slam is on the grass-courts at Wimbledon so that affects her as well. She is now 38 and has started a family.
“There are so many different scenarios and question marks.
“And Andy Murray is going to miss another Wimbledon. It is going to make him re-think everything as well. It is a nightmare.”
