Alison Riske impresses in Mallorca to end Angelique Kerber hopes

American Alison Riske won all five games played on Wednesday to eliminate second seed Angelique Kerber from the Mallorca Open in the first round.

Poor light on Tuesday night had halted play at 1-1 in the deciding set, but there was no stopping Riske on the resumption as she completed a 5-7 6-2 6-1 victory.

“I always love playing on grass, it’s my favourite time of year,” Riske told

“And I think this is the hottest weather I’ve ever had while playing on a grass court, so it’s been really nice.”

There appear to be no such problems for top seed Caroline Garcia, who has marched into her third straight quarter-final in the competition.

The 2016 champion, who beat Johanna Larsson 6-4 6-3, will next face American teenager Sofia Kenin, who was a 2-6 6-4 6-4 winner over Alison van Uytvanck.
