The Eastbourne Open is the final pre-Wimbledon tournament on the calendar and the main draw features three top-20 players with British No 1 Emma Raducanu also returning to the WTA 250 event.

Top seed and defending champion Daria Kasatkina is the highest-ranked player in the draw as she currently sits at No 16 in the WTA Rankings with Barbora Krecjikova (17) and Jelena Ostapenko (19) not too far behind.

Besides reigning Wimbledon winner Krecjikova and 2017 French Open winner Ostapenko, 2021 US Open winner Raducanu and 2020 Australian Open champion Sofia Kenin are the other Grand Slam winners who will compete at Devonshire Park in the coming week.

Last year Kasatkina defeated Raducanu in the quarter-final, Jasmine Paolini in the semi-final and Leylah Fernandez in the final to win her seventh WTA Tour singles title.

There is some bad news for Kasatkina and those who competed last year as the tournament was a WTA 500 event in 2024, but it has been downgraded to a WTA 250 event this year.

It means players will drop more points than they can earn. For example, Kasatkina will drop 500 points as the defending champion, but the maximum she can earn is 250 for successfully defending her title.

Fernandez is not competing in Eastbourne this week, but at the Bad Homburg Open instead. She will drop 325 points after finishing runner-up last year, but the German event is also WTA 500 event so she can regain that with another run to the final.

Meanwhile, Raducanu reached the last eight in 2024 so will drop 108 points and she can only earn more if she reaches the semi-final.

The 2021 US Open winner replaced Katie Boulter as the British No 1 on Monday and she sits at No 36 in the Live Rankings with 1,399 so will move to 1,291 points after her 108 points come off.

Even though Boulter is on 1,326 points following her Nottingham Open quarter-final exit, Raducanu will keep her British No 1 ranking at Wimbledon.

Boulter will also drop 108 points as she also lost in the quarters, but she won’t be in action in Eastbourne this year.

In terms of prize money, Kasatkina earned £112,235 in 2024 for her title run, but the earnings are more for WTA 500 events.

This year the winner will receive a cheque of £29,323 (about $39,00) while the runner-up will earn £17,355 ($23,000).
