‘I am expecting 2020 tennis season to be abandoned,’ says Simona Halep as she prepares for worst
Wimbledon champion Simona Halep says she is preparing for the ‘worst case scenario’ of seeing the entire remainder of the tennis year wiped out by the coronavirus.
The coronavirus crisis has seen three months of tournaments cancelled already, with Wimbledon announcing last week they would be abandoning their 2020 Championships.
The WTA have been further hit by the Rogers Cup in August being cancelled too, with that decision being taken by the local government in Quebec.
No one currently knows when the tennis schedule will be able to resume, but Halep is preparing for the worst.
“For the worst-case scenario in my head is this year is going to be cancelled,” she said. “I’m sure we are going to pass this period, if we listen and if we stay safe at home.
“But for the moment the break is going to be longer and through July. My longest break was three weeks until this break.
“I don’t really have that feeling to know how is it after such a long break with playing. I don’t know what to expect.
“But the most important thing in game are the legs. I have to keep running and kept my muscles activated if I move well on the court tennis is going to be okay.”
