Jessica Pegula didn’t win a single match during her WTA Finals debut in 2022, but this year she is the first player into the semi-finals after a brilliant win over world No 1 Aryna Sabalenka.

The American followed up her two-set win over Elena Rybanka in their opening match with an equally impressive 6-4, 6-3 victory over Sabalenka and, with Rybakina defeating Maria Sakkari, she booked her place in the last four.

The win was also her third over a world No 1 in 2023 as she defeated Iga Swiatek at the United Cup in January and the Canadian Open in August.

Quite the transformation after her struggles last year.

“I feel more comfortable playing [top players] this year, I feel more confident,” Pegula said. “I don’t think it feels like such a big deal. Last year when I made top five, I think I psyched myself out a little bit – not a lot. You have a couple thoughts in your head – do I really belong at that level?

“I was always good at beating those below me, but now you have to beat the one or two before you. I think you put a bigger emphasis on that. And I think this year, I’ve not really cared. I’ve had more confidence in those matches and that’s why I’ve got more top wins – in big moments. I feel that’s where I’ve improved a little bit.”

Pegula’s win also added a twist to the battle for the year-end No 1 ranking between Sabalenka and Swiatek.

Had Sabalenka gone 3-0 in the group stage then Swiatek would have had to win the title undefeated, but the Pole can now lose a group match and still end up as the year-end No 1.

Australian Open champion Sabalenka just never got going and committed 33 unforced errors while she hit only 15 winners compared to Pegula’s 12 unforced errors and 17 winners.

“I guess she just played great tennis,” the Belarusian said. “Yes, I could come back in this match – but it was too much.

“But, I still get a chance to pass the group, so I’m trying to stay strong.”

The world No 1 will now need to win her final Bacalar Group match against Rybakina if she is to qualify for the semi-final. Pegula will face the already eliminated Sakkari in the other match.
