This myth about Jessica Pegula has been put to bed
One analyst feels that a persistent myth about Jessica Pegula needs to be put to bed.
Andrea Petkovic has rubbished the notion that Jessica Pegula doesn’t have any great weapons.
Petkovic believes that this idea has sprung up from a place of ignorance as anyone who has ever faced Pegula can attest.
“That people believe Pegula has no weapons is a mind-boggling thing,” Petkovic said.
“She has such hard, flat shots it can take the racquet out of your hands.”
While many pundits feel that women’s tennis has a new big three in the form of Iga Swiatek, Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka, Petkovic feels that we should be talking about a big four.
“This is the time to start talking about the Big Four,” Petkovic added.
“Please stop saying Jess Pegula doesn’t have any weapons. If you were on the other side of those shots, you wouldn’t be saying that.”
Pegula breezed to a maiden Masters title with a qucikfire win over a clearly out of sorts Liudmila Samsonova in just 49 minutes.
She feels that it was a case of still needing to get the job done, and she was delighted with the clinical way she would clinch the title in Montreal.
“Obviously, physically she wasn’t feeling her best,” Pegula told reporters later, “but at the same time I played a really clean match. I don’t really think I made any unforced errors or anything. I played kind of a perfect match.
“I could just play freely, and I kept trying to get the break and just hold for as long as I could until I won the match. So, yeah, it was a good day.”
Aside from her well-documented streak of Grand Slam quarter-final losses, Pegula has also struggled for titles at other big events on the tour.
She feels that the Montreal win makes up for some of her disappointments.
“Beating Coco and beating Iga were two really tough wins back-to-back, and being able to do that and then just come out today and play a really clean match was kind of great,” Pegula said.
“Even when you’re winning a lot of matches, you’re still not winning tournaments, so it can get tough. Winning a week like this week makes it all worth it and makes you want to keep going for more.”
Pegula dedicated her victory to her dog Dexter whom she recently lost.
“From 2 weeks ago crying on my couch for days wondering how the hell I was going to start this swing – to this week – this one’s for you Dex, thanks for looking out for me down here ,” Pegula wrote on Instagram.
