Polona Hercog overcomes Fiona Ferro to get shot at ending seven-year title drought
Slovenia’s Polona Hercog has qualified for the Lugano final after overcoming Fiona Ferro in the semis.
The 28-year-old has not won a WTA title for seven years, but will get her chance in Switzerland after battling to a 7-5, 6-4 win.
“I feel amazing and I’m really happy. The atmosphere is very relaxed, the crowd is great, and I’m enjoying it,” an elated Hercog said upon reaching the final.
“I’ve had a pretty good few days and I’m feeling good here.”
Hercog will face either Kristyna Pliskova or Iga Swiatek in the final, but she says she’s confident no matter who awaits.
“It’s always good to know what’s waiting for you in the next round. I have to make a little plan for the next match,” she said.
“I will just go out there and enjoy it. I’ve been in this situation last year. I just want to enjoy the moment and try to play my best tennis.”
