‘Sad’ Simona Halep forced to withdraw from the Miami Open due to injury

Simona Halep’s Miami Open campaign came to a premature end on Saturday as the world No 3 was forced to pull out of the tournament due to injury.
After winning her second-round encounter against Caroline Garcia in three sets on Thursday, she teamed up with fellow Grand Slam winner Angelique Kerber in the doubles to stun top seeds Aryna Sabalenka and Elise Mertens.
Halep was due to face Latvia’s Anastasija Sevastova in the third round on Saturday, but a right-shoulder injury led to her withdrawal from WTA 1000 event.

“I’m very sorry I have to pull out of singles and doubles at the Miami Open, but my injury doesn’t let me play here as I expected,” she said.
“I’m sad that I can’t continue, I wanted to come here to give my best and play many matches but unfortunately I can’t. Hopefully next year I will be back healthy and better.”
