Caroline Wozniacki makes contentious wildcard claim after Simona Halep’s tennis comeback
Simona Halep was beaten on her return from a doping ban, going down in three sets to Paula Badosa at the Miami Open, with former world No 1 Caroline Wozniacki choosing her moment to offer up some brutally honest views on the Romanian’s comeback.
Halep, a two-time Grand Slam winner who spent 64 weeks as world number one, was playing her first match since the Court of Arbitration for Sport reduced her suspension from four years to nine months.
Halep looked like she had never been away as she raced away with the first set in just 38 minutes, but Badosa, herself a former world number two, dug in to win 1-6, 6-4, 6-3.
Halep, who won Wimbledon in 2019, tested positive for the blood-boosting drug Roxadustat at the US Open in 2022 and was handed a lengthy suspension last September.
Wozniacki swept past France’s Clara Burel 6-1, 6-4 in her opening match at the Miami Open and when asked about Halep’s comeback, she offered up this considered response to what is a divisive issue.
“Well, first of all, I’ve always liked Simona. We’ve always had a good relationship,” she told reporters.
“I’ve been very outspoken in the past about how I feel about doping and all of that. I think my view on doping is the same. I have always wanted a clean sport, fair for everybody. I think it’s definitely still my opinion.
“Again, this is not directly at Simona, but if someone purposely cheats, if someone has tested positive for doping… I understand why a tournament wants a big star in the tournament, but it’s my personal belief, and it’s not a knock on anyone, but it’s my personal belief that I don’t think people should be awarded wildcards afterwards.

“If you want to come back, and it’s been a mistake, I understand, you should work your way up from the bottom. That’s my personal opinion upon things.”
Halep’s quick return to action was marred by what appeared to be a shoulder problem and it is unclear when she will next make an appearance on the WTA Tour, with Wozniacki suggesting every athlete needs to take responsibility for what they put into their bodies.

“Simona’s situation has obviously dragged on for a long time,” added Wozniacki.
“She got her suspension reduced. It wasn’t a clearance, it was a reduced sentence. She’s now been off of the game for a while and she’s coming back.
“Again, I just hope for a clean sport. That’s all I want. I want to have good role models for the young generation. It’s a sport that has a lot of money in it, a lot of competitiveness, a lot of competitors. I want a fair fight.
“I’ve always been a very honest athlete and always looked at everything that I’ve taken. Even taking Tylenol is something I double and triple check three times. All I want is for my kids to look up and say, You know what, I want to play tennis and I want to play fair.
“I still have a chance. I want to be out there competing fair and square with everyone else. That’s my view on things, how I’m raising my kids as well. Fight fair.
“No matter where you’re going to be, what you want to do, just do it with the right mindset. That’s where I am.”
Halep’s comeback in Miami may have been brief and it will be fascinating to see if other tournament directors are as eager to offer up wildcards to the returning champion after Wozniacki’s thought-provoking comments.
