WTA Rankings: Iga Swiatek holds off charging Aryna Sabalenka with Elena Rybakina up to No 3
Iga Swiatek’s title as world No 1 in the WTA Rankings came under serious threat at Roland Garros, but she dealt with everything that was thrown at her – particularly from Aryna Sabalenka – to remain top.
The Pole – who first took over at No 1 in April 2022 – successfully defended her French Open title with a tough three-set win over Karolina Muchova in the final to take her Paris trophy tally to three to go with the US Open trophy she won last year.
Up until the semi-finals, Swiatek’s lead at the top was precarious with Sabalenka still in the running for the title. However, the Belarusian lost in the last four against Muchova and Swiatek went on to win the title anyway to remain on 8,940 points.
Sabalenka, though, has reduced the lead to 912 points and she will once again challenge Swiatek for the No 1 spot come Wimbledon.
Elena Rybakina was also an outside contender to claim the No 1 ranking, but her charge came to an end in the third round as she withdrew due to illness. The reigning Wimbledon champion, though, still moved up one place to a new career-high No 3.
The biggest change in the top 10 sees Beatriz Haddad Maia achieve a new career-high No 10 after the Brazilian’s run to semi-final of a Grand Slam for the first time in her career. Haddad Maia is up four places.
But the biggest winner in the top 20 is Roland Garros runner-up Muchova who surged up 27 places to new career-best No 16 after picking up 1,300 points.
A lot further down the list, former world No 3 Elina Svitolina moved up 119 places to No 73 after reaching the quarter-final at Roland Garros while 16-year-old sensation Mirra Andreeva is up to 102 after she reached the third round on a her Grand Slam main draw debut.
