WTA Rankings: Iga Swiatek moves ahead of Caroline Wozniacki; consolation for Liudmila Samsonova
Iga Swiatek has extended her stay at the top of the WTA Rankings for another week and she now sits alone in 10th place on the all-time list for most weeks at No 1.
On the back of her run to the quarter-final of the Canadian Open, the Pole confirmed that she would remain at No 1 for a 72nd consecutive week with the rest of the top 10 unchanged following the Montreal event.
That figure of 72 weeks helped Swiatek to move ahead of Caroline Wozniacki in the list for most weeks spent at No 1 in the WTA Rankings with the Dane bumped down to 11th.
The four-time Grand Slam winner, though, will take a while before she is able to move further up the list as Lindsay Davenport in ninth is on 98 weeks while there is an even bigger gap ahead of the American.
Steffi Graf sits at No 1 with 377 weeks and she is followed by Martina Navratilova (332), Serena Williams (319), Chris Evert (260), Martina Hingis (209), Monica Seles (178), Ashleigh Barty (121) and Justine Henin (117).
Back to the modern top 10, it remains unchanged following the Canadian event with Swiatek followed by Sabalenka, Pegula, Rybakina, Jabeur, Gauff, Sakkari, Kvitova and Vondrousova.
Swiatek has a 744-point lead over Sabalenka, but Pegula was the big winner as she won the WTA 1000 event in Montreal and added a healthy 550 points to her tally. However, the gap to Sabalenka is quite big as the Belarusian is more than 2,700 points ahead of her.
Further down the list and Liudmila Samsonova received some consolation following the disappointing Montreal final.
Samsonova had to play two matches on Sunday as she first defeated Elena Rybakina in the semi-final and then faced Pegula, but the final turned into a damp squib as the Russian suffered a 6-1, 6-0 defeat.
Her run to the final was still good enough to help her to move up to No 12 in the rankings – a position she also held in February this year.
Meanwhile, 2022 Australian Open runner-up Danielle Collins is back up to No 34 following her run to the fourth round and British No 1 Katie Boulter is up 12 places to a career-high No 60 after reaching the second round in Montreal.
