Coco Gauff celebrates Australian Open 2024

Coco Gauff has for the first time in her career broken through the 7,000-point barrier in the WTA Rankings and she could secure another milestone if she reaches the Australian Open final.

Reigning US Open champion Gauff started the tournament with 6,580 points – the most she had accumulated in her career – and her run to the last four has seen her pick up another 540 points to move to 7,200 points – just 135 points adrift of Aryna Sabalenka in second place in the WTA Rankings.

Sabalenka, though, will move to 7,685 points if she beats Barbora Krejcikova in her quarter-final, but victory will see her set up a semi-final against Gauff and it will be a shootout for the post-Australian Open No 2 ranking.

Iga Swiatek will keep the No 1 spot in the rankings despite her shock third-round defeat to 19-year-old Linda Noskova at Melbourne Park and she will maintain a fairly comfortable lead.

The Pole started the tournament with a 975-point advantage, but that lead will be 865 points if Sabalenka successfully defends her trophy while it will be above 1,000 points if the Belarusian doesn’t win the title.

There will only be a couple of other changes in the top 10 after the tournament with Elena Rybakina dropping two places after her early exit with Gauff and Pegula moving up.
