Official 2023 WTA top prize-money earners list: Iga Swiatek pips Aryna Sabalenka at the post

Iga Swiatek not only pipped Aryna Sabalenka to the year-end No 1 ranking with her unbeaten title run at the WTA Finals, but she also finished the 2023 season as the top WTA prize-money earner.

Sabalenka was in the lead up until the WTA Finals as she started the tournament on $7,554,653 with Swiatek on $6,779,686, but the Pole’s bumper payday meant she finished well clear on $9,857,686.

Incredibly, Swiatek’s v is the sixth-best season ever on the WTA Tour in terms of earnings with Serena Williams sitting pretty at No 1 on $12,385,572 for the 2013 season.

10. Petra Kvitova – $2,488,381

Two-time Wimbledon winner Petra Kvitova is fifth in the all-time career-prize money list with $37,200,032 – not too far away from Maria Sharapova’s $38,777,962 in fourth.

The Czech’s biggest payday in 2023 came in March when she collected $1,262,220 for winning the Miami Open.

9. Maria Sakkari – $2,605,413 ($5,274 from doubles)

Greek Maria Sakkari has enjoyed a purple patch during the latter half of the 2023 season as she won her maiden WTA 1000 title at the Guadalajara Open in September and also finished runner-up at the DC Open.

This is already Sakkari’s best year in terms of earnings as she has surpassed her previous best tally of $2,029,990, which she achieved in 2021.

8. Ons Jabeur – $3,194,564 – ($18,885 from doubles)

The trailblazer from Tunisia has had a disappointing season compared to her 2022 campaign as she has struggled with injury for most of the year.

However, she has still managed to win two titles – the Charleston Open and the Ningbo Open – while she also finished runner-up at Wimbledon to earn $1,487,229.

Jabeur’s career prize money stands at $12,379,307 with most of that coming from last season when she won $4,977,069.

7. Karolina Muchova – $2,804,438 ($8,100 from doubles)

After an injury-disrupted 2022 season that saw her earn only $443,949, Karolina Muchova has sextupled that figure as she is on $2,804,438 for the year.

The Czech’s best performances this year came at the French Open where she finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek and the Cincinnati Masters where she lost against Coco Gauff in the final.

6. Marketa Vondrousova – $4,275,278 – ($138,750 from doubles)

Marketa Vondrousova won her first title in six years when she defeated Ons Jabeur in the Wimbledon final and besides the Venus Rosewater Dish, she also collected a cheque of $2,974,458.

This is the first year since 2019 that Vondrousova has surpassed the $1m mark.

5. Elena Rybakina – $5,493,437 ($64,103 from doubles)

After earning $3,613,440 in 2022, Elena Rybakina started her 2023 season with a $1,091,496 cheque after finishing runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka at the Australian Open.

The Kazakh star also earned $1,262,220 for winning the Indian Wells Open, $662,360 for finishing runner-up at the Miami Open and $552,008 for winning the Italian Open.

4. Jessica Pegula – $5,967,890 ($715,740 from doubles, $52,054 from mixed doubles)

Jessica Pegula won the Canadian Open ($454,500) and also finished runner-up at the Qatar Ladies Open and the Pan Pacific Open while her most recent success was her title run at the Korea Open, although she “only” earned $34,228.

She also won $372,956 for her run to the Australian Open quarter-final and $430,347 for reaching the Wimbledon last eight.

However, her best payday came at the WTA Finals as she pocketed $1,602,000 for finishing runner-up.

3. Coco Gauff – $6,669,622 ($715,740 from doubles)

Coco Gauff is now in the top 50 of the WTA’s all-time list for career-prize money earnings with $12,2m despite being only 19 years old.

The teenager’s biggest payday to date came at the US Open when she won $3,000,000 for winning the title at Flushing Meadows. She also won $454,500 for her Cincinnati Masters title run and $120,150 for winning the Citi DC Open.

Her biggest event in doubles came at the Miami Open as she shared a cheque of $336,920 with Jessica Pegula.

2. Aryna Sabalenka – $8,202,653 ($6,950 from doubles)

Aryna Sabalenka started the year with back-to-back trophies Down Under and her Australian Open title was accompanied by a $1,998,278 cheque.

She also earned $1,500,000 for finishing runner-up to Coco Gauff at the US Open, $1,271,055 for winning the Madrid Open and $662,360 for her run to the Miami Open final.

For most of the season, it looked like she would top the earnings list, but Swiatek pipped her at the post with the WTA Finals title.

The Belarusian’s career earnings stand at $20,377,563, which puts her 23rd on the overall list. Sabalenka’s previous best season came in 2019 when she collected $3,415,687.

1. Iga Swiatek – $9,857,686

Four-time Grand Slam winner Iga Swiatek earned a bumper payday with her undefeated run at the WTA Finals in Cancun as she added $3,078,000 to her account to finish the year on $9,857,686, just marginally lower than the $9,875,525 she earned last year.

Besides her Cancun cheque, the Pole also earned $2,496,039 for successfully defending her French Open crown and $1,3m for her latest title in Beijing. Swiatek also collected winners’ cheques at the Qatar Open, Porsche Tennis Grand Prix and Poland Open.

Swiatek is already 14th in the overall WTA prize-money earner’s list with $24,592,763.
