WTA Tour: What August holds for the top women in tennis

The WTA Tour shifts its focus to North America in August apart from a single exception.
While the ATP Tour has not sanctioned any full tour events outside of North America, the WTA Tour has a 125 event in Romania in the first week of August.
Most of the top players will still repair to North America as soon as possible with the WTA 250 Citi Open and the WTA 500 Silicon Valley Classic attracting the big names.
There will be another pair of 125 events in the second week of August in Concord and Vancouver for those that aren’t able to make the main draw for the Masters’ event in Toronto.
The Citi Open in Washington DC and the Western and Southern Open in Cincinnati see the WTA Tour and ATP Tour come together for concurrent events.
WTA 250 events in Cleveland and Granby will offer final preparation for players eager for time on court ahead of the final Major of 2022, which starts on August 29.
August is a month of returns for the WTA Tour with several top players set to end time away from the game.
Naomi Osaka has announced she will return to the tour at the Silicon Valley Classic in the first week in August.
Osaka missed Wimbledon after aggravating an Achilles injury during the French Open.
Also returning to WTA Tour are both the Williams sisters with Serena confirmed in the field for Toronto and Cincinnati and Venus confirming she will play the Citi Open for the first time in her career dispelling the belief that she had played her last match.
World No 1 Iga Swiatek looks likely to delay her own trip to North America as she has not entered the field in either DC or San Jose, but is named in the latest entry list for the National Bank Open in Toronto.
